Now maybe it's just me and maybe I've read far too much into the Warhammer 40K lore and universe...but I'm seeing a lot of parallels between it and the now available on Netflix movie Mortal Engines..
What is this Warhammer 40K Lore and Universe all about then?
Oh god, how do I even go about answering this question without making this post roughly 10 thousand pages long? You could start with the
famous table top war game set in that universe, or perhaps you've caught a glimpse of this world through playing a Space Marine chapter via Space Hulk or
Dawn or War. There's also the Ultramarine's movie that nobody remembers, the
Astartes Youtube project, plenty of books, lots of expensive miniatures and even comics.
If you're new to this world, you better take a year off to research (there is so much there) and when you come back, some of my comparison ramblings between Mortal Engines and 40K might finally make sense.
I know what you speak of! Bless the Omnisiah! But what is this movie?
In a post-apocalyptic world where cities ride on wheels and consume each other to survive, two people meet in London and try to stop a conspiracy.
I kid you not, it's super entertaining watching a small city fire up massive engines and try to outrun and even bigger city. London on wheels is a real pain in the ass. Robert Sheehan (Klaus from Umbrella Academy) is pretty good, Hugo Weaving looks revitalized and the guy selling the slaves at market steals the show.
Was the film influenced by Warhammer 40K? Er...possibly not. But here's a few things I picked up while watching!
Magnus Crome looks like a Warhammer 40K Commisar
Could the Lord Mayor of London secretly be working as an agent of the Emperer?
No retreat you cowards! BLAM!
Shrike is a necron
I mean look at him, of course he is! A necron in need of a clean but still..
The cities are all Titans
Okay titans on wheels (so more Ork titans than imperial ones) but still based on Titans. Like the Imperator class.
The lions on London represent Lion El Johnson
And you could see him riding on such a grand city couldn't you?
Fun fact:
Lion grew up in a feudal state based world complete with knights so having him perched on an English titan, nay city, really isn't that far fetched when you think about it.
Plus the treads on the city look like something you should see on an Imperial tank. Just saying.
The Sausage Making Fraternity are actually Ogryns
No doubt about it, they both love their sausages!
Anna Fang is an Eldar
Lithe, cat like and just as lethal
Have I missed any? Any comparisons you've come across? Let me know below!
