100 down, just 100 left in Hyper's interesting list of must play video games. We've had text adventures as well as hits from systems I've never even crossed paths with but surely in this next 50 there'll be more than a handful that I've actually put finger to action button?

Will Wu Tang Taste The Pain make the grade? Let's find out! |
Surely?
(This is part 3 of the list. If you want to start at the very beginning as we explore 200 on down, just click here.)
Obviously I am not one on that list and being a puzzle game, probably never will be..
102. DODONPACHI - The misses continue as I plead the...er....9th on this one? 'If a game has a Japanese name, I will probably not remember what it's about.' Cars yes, Japanese games not so much. 'Angry leader bee' as it translates here is a shoot em up that showed up in arcades in the late 90s but I missed it. It turned up on other consoles and in a non-stunning turn of events, I missed it again. This third section of the list isn't going well here is it?
103. HALO: COMBAT INVOLVED - Look I know of it, but I haven't played it. It hasn't stopped me enjoying the hilarious Red Vs Blue Halo based webseries though from Rooster Teeth.
104. ASSASSIN'S CREED 2 - Owned the first, played the first, watched the movie and even read a couple of the (big, these books were huge size and font) novelizations. Did not make it to the second or subsequent releases after the first though..
Why didn't Hyper pick the first one?
105. MARIO KART 8 - Eight? They're up to eight now? God only knows what I got up to but I know it wasn't this one..
106. PEGGLE - Oh here's a rarity, a game in this next 50 I've actually played! Bought online for the Xbox 360 it's a game my wife and I loved playing and then introduced to the kids when they were old enough. Lots of family fun, especially when it comes down to how the final ball lands and still on my Xbox one to this day (along with Castle Crashers which is great fun.) (25/200)
107. 80 DAYS - Horror movie with fantastically fast and rabid zombies? Er no, that's 28 Days Later. Amazingly this is a game inspired by Jules Vern's Around the World in 80 Days and is apparently a masterpiece of interactive storytelling which probably explains why it's here. No zombies though, just in case you were wondering.
As interesting as it sounds, I still haven't played it though.
108. TOKYO JUNGLE - Look my Geography scores back in my high school days weren't the greatest but I don't remember there actually being any jungles in Tokyo. Maybe a couple of cherry blossoms but a supreme lack of jungle foliage. However in this one you're unlikely to find much in humanity either because in the future the city is deserted and instead teaming with wildlife ready to tear you, dear unfortunate player, to shreds. Interesting!
109. HOTLINE MIAMI - Have heard plenty of this one but yet to play it. Does look good though!
110. GRAND THEFT AUTO IV - The first three, yeah sure. This one? Not yet. I have one of them on my epic store freebie list but since I haven't installed it yet it's still a no to this instalment. (Just checked, I have V on the Epic list but nowhere near the space left on the hard drive to install it.)
111. GAUNTLET - Have played quite a few versions of Gauntlet including PC, at the arcade and even a small LCD game device version thing. Also played Barbarian too, more than likely thanks to the option in Golden Axe. Barbarian's rock and gaming is the better for them. (26/200)
112. OUT RUN - Another one of those 'Have played a few versions of this on various systems' including arcade. Hell it was even the onboard game for the original Master System before Alex Kidd came along if memory serves correct! I forget which one but I enjoyed the arcade version where you could change your car selection by holding down the start button. Or was it the turbo button? Anyway, memories. (27/200)
113. RESIDENT EVIL 4 - The first one was blocky and slow. Then they became faster and more streamlined over time and now they're remaking various versions to make them even better. However I never got past the first one in actually trying it out..
114. BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM - Looking back at it now, it's a game I wished I had sunk more time into. Finding all of Riddler's hidden stuff. Appreciating the madness of Mark Hamil as The Joker. Getting through a few more levels. I believe I sold it as part of a package with my Xbox 360. Oh well, it still rocked. (28/200)
115. CRAZY TAXI - The benefit of living with a gaming nutter back in the day (and I believe he is still very active in the gaming scene) was getting a few rounds of this on the Dreamcast. Doc was and will remain the only person I know to ever actually have one of those Sega consoles too.. (29/200)
116. THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY - I vaguely remember there being a game made of the film but I've never actually seen in it action. Luckily plenty of people who aren't me have played it and kindly put their thoughts on the game up on Youtube. Having checked out a couple of clips, I'll admit that it does look pretty good.
117. THE BINDING OF ISAAC - Terrible game tie in with 50 Shades of Grey? Thankfully not (I shiver at that thought if it was ever considered though). Instead it's an Indie Roguelike inspired by the biblical story of the same name. This year is celebrates its tenth year in existence. Well done Isaac!
118. PUZZLE QUEST - There are many many many many many many match three games in existence and let's be honest, most of them are rubbish. Puzzle Quest which I discovered on the Xbox 360 however was not and I sunk many a night into getting my Knight and Druid character built up to take on everything from Goblins to Trolls to even matching wits and skulls to take on entire Castles. Again this is one where I remember the sound effects so well, especially the noise it makes if you try and match something that doesn't work. Great stuff. (30/200)
119. POKEMON RED/BLUE/YELLOW - Based on what I've played so far, I know admitting to this is probably surprising. And truth be told, it came about by accident. My brother took the bus home from school one day and found a Pokemon Red cartridge just there on the seat next to him, so naturally he brought it home and threw it into the collection of games we had which included Super Mario Bros, Double Dragon and even the epic Bill and Ted Excellent Adventure!
Fast forward to when I moved out of home and my Gameboy somehow came with me. I'd just got my first job and needed to get some more clothes so I took the bus from Hamilton to Ballarat (which was a good two and half hour trip) to get some shopping done and guess what I played along the way? Very handy when I had to wait a few hours for the bus heading back home too. Thanks whoever left this on the bus originally! (31/200)
120. STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC - That's affirmative captain. Played for a few hours, threw the charger into the giant beasts maw, did a few other things, crossed this off the list. (32/200)
121. JET SET FUTURE RADIO - While I never played the this sequel, hilariously my Steam history tells me I tried original (well the one on Steam anyway) for all of two minutes, more than five years ago. It must left a lasting impression on me then..
122. THE LAST OF US - I reckon there was a time where no matter where you looked, this post apocalyptic survival game popped up - either images or the front cover. What was I doing when this was happening? Playing other games obviously (games that sadly didn't rate a mention in this big list) and not this one.
123. WII SPORTS - Wrist strain from bowling attempting trick shots? You betcha. The local electrical retailer was kind enough to lend us a Wii to talk about on air when they first came out and you can bet we put that thing through it's paces with Wii Sports (more bowling than anything else.) (33/200)
124. SUPER MEAT BOY - I reckon it was on the ABC TV Good Game I first saw this one with the very entertaining Bajo and Hex. I loved that show but I didn't run out to try this game on for size..
125. ROCKET LEAGUE - Similar to the GTA 5 Scenario above, I have this game. It's there on the Epic Game Store ready to play whenever I am. I get updates all the time about which DLC is ready. However I haven't actually got around to installing it so for the sake of this list..
126. ANOTHER WORLD - I remember this well including the animations of getting slashed by the beast in the early level if you got too close! What I didn't know that the anniversary edition was released for the PS4. The more you know.. (34/200)
127. MASS EFFECT - Strangely I had the first of this great instalment when it came out in the platinum series, a game that was old enough and possibly sold enough to be dropped in price. I bought it thinking that it was a one off only to find the series get better and better. Andromeda though? It's hit and miss compared to three. But what a fantastic series. (35/200)
128. KENTUCKY ROUTE ZERO - Didn't I back this horse in the 2012 Melbourne Cup and lose my lunch money on it? Er no, must have been another horse. Anyway this is apparently a very good point and click adventure about a secret highway under Kentucky. Well that's a new one!
129. CHRONO TRIGGER - I'm suspect on this one thanks to a trip to Bali back in the early 2000. Back then games for a chipped PSX were 4500rp which worked out to be roughly one dollar Australian. So naturally I came back with quite a few. One of them may have been Chrono Trigger but I'm not entirely sure due to the possibility that I may have brought back some kind of bootleg of something similar. We're talking almost 20 years back so it's been a while..
130. TETRIS - I can still hear the music in my head to this day! I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not. Usually the free game you get with consoles only lasts a short while (see: Alex Kidd in miracle world) but there was something about Tetris and the cartridge you got with the original Gameboy that kept you coming back. Even more so when your brother also got a Gameboy and your link cable came out to play. (36/200)
131. LEMMINGS - 'Stop these critters from killing themselves' must have been a strange idea session back in the day but hey it worked. And even better, I played it! (Even though I wasn't great at saving them all ultimately but that's another story..' (37/200)
132. PORTAL- Again I was aware of the game, I was aware of the hype and the rave reviews of the game. But have I played the game yet, I have not. Look I've been busy okay with lots of RPG to try and level up through..
133. DONKEY KONG - Played it and enjoyed the madness of the movie The King of Kong. One of those games I show my kids to show them where my enjoyment of game started to kick off.. (38/200)
134. DEUS EX - Another tick in the play column as I installed this and gave it a quick run through. I don't remember it staying on my rickety pc back in the day though, possibly for space reasons. (remember we're talking the days where 1TB hard drives seemed like a pipe dream.) It remains to this day one of the best selling games of all time. (39/200)
135. MINECRAFT - My kids are addicted to this. Well Minecraft and Roblox currently. Occasionally I play with them but while they're off crafting vast mansions with moving machinery, I'm struggling to create a mud hut that I don't immediately want to blow up with TNT. Still, at least I make it (40/200) entertaining..
136. THREES! - 'A tiny puzzle that grows on you!' And that's about as far as I got with this one before I zoned out..
137. YOSHI'S ISLAND - Hesitant on this one, Googling did bring back some memories of Yoshi flapping about in the air mid jump. So turns out I have played this one but in what capacity and in who's house (or more likely which shop demo) I have no idea. (41/200)
138. TONY HAWK'S PRO SKATER 2 - The original and greatest skateboarding game of all time. 'You got me running in a cy-calone, you got me running in a cy-calone!' Seriously along with Grand Turismo 2, this was one of the reasons my PS One controller never spent much time not being used. The soundtrack was brilliant, the cheat modes hilarious (gravity mode anyone?), the battles my brother and I had playing Horse, brutal (I'm not going to admit here what we changed the challenge word to but it was highly entertaining.) I had it on the PSX, I had it on the PC and no matter how many subsequent versions of Tony's efforts they put out, they never beat this one. Absolute classic. (42/200)
(A shout out to BMX:XXX which came out in the same era which was hilariously awful and clunky. Long live Tony the king.)
139. BODY HARVEST - Now if this isn't the title of a cheesy late night 80s movie, I will be surprised.
(One quick search on IMDB later..) Well I was half right, there is a movie called Body Harvest but it wasn't from the 80's, it's in post production which means it's on it way. Obviously it has nothing to do with this N64 game which is all about: It’s the year 2016. The Earth lies in ruins. That’s because the world has been harvested to the brink of extinction by man-eating aliens over the past 100 years.
Interesting for sure...but god only knows what the last thing I played on the N64 was..
140. LIFE IS STRANGE - Possibly in my ever growing list of Epic Game freebies, I'm not sure. (Actually may be from a lucky dip thing from Fanatical.) What I do know is that I haven't got round to playing it yet.
141. JOURNEY/FLOWER - 80's bands unite! (Well before Flowers turned to Icehouse...) This casual indie game probably doesn't have any hits from Journey or Icehouse in it though and a casual look via Steam suggests it probably won't end up in my play list in the near foreseeable future..
142. SUPER SMASH BROTHERS MELEE - Not only have I played it, I remember where I played it this time! Part of a kids day at the Zone fun park in Bendigo many moons ago. I gave it a couple of rounds before the kids who knew what they were doing rolled up to show this older radio announcer how it was done. That demonstration didn't make me rush out and buy it though.. (43/200)
143. THE WALKING DEAD: SEASON 1 - Seen the TV show which made me very wary of crossing any Carol's I may meet if the zombies do indeed take over but no, have not tried the game on. Apparently it contains some very difficult decisions to make and I struggle at times to work out where my pants went each night after waking up..
144. VANQUISH - Not the terribly rated film with Ruby Rose and Morgan Freeman. Not anything to do with Aston Martin. It's a shooter that looks a cross between Halo, Mass Effect and Transformers. Not one I've played.
145. BRAID - Puzzle platform game and not a style of hair.
146. PANG - A long long long time ago I was a big reader of video game magazines such as Computer and Video Games (CVG) and even the Sega club magazine (paid $15 to subscribe and even got a cool t-shirt) and I remember seeing this originally for PC in CVG thinking 'well that looks alright.' Later on I tried it at the local arcade and didn't last very long before the bubbles I was supposed to pop brought me down. So at least I tried it. (44/200)
147. DEFENDER OF THE CROWN - I was all of 6 years old when this came on the scene and while I missed it back then, undoubtedly I have gone on to play many a game inspired by it..
148. DOUBLE DRAGON - Played it at the arcade (tough) and it was a favorite on the Master System (far easier) between my brother and myself, especially after we discovered the cheat code for endless lives on the last level (Jump and spin kick 15 times at the start of the level - it's amazing what you remember after all this time.) What I still don't get is the fight you have between Billy and Jimmy at the very end, after you save the girlfriend. I mean she's not dating both blokes at the same time is she? And why are you trying to kill each other after surviving all the battle so far? Still a classic though. (45/200)
149. SUPER METROID - There is a possibility I may have tried this on a demo SNES, level 6 of Myer back in the 90s. But with no time machine or Tardis handy, I can't confirm nor deny this rumor.
150. GUARDIAN HEROES - A side scrolling beat em up with RPG elements? Are we talking like Dungeons and Dragons Shadow Over Mystara? In which case I'm sad I missed this one. I loved the glory days of beat em ups (luckily I can relive a lot of those memories through Mame) but this cartoony fighter looks like one I definitely should have tried.
Well okay then, some redemption found in this section of the list, leaving me with just 5 more games I've played to hit at least 1/4 of Hyper's big list of must play. Surely there's enough in the remaining 50 to cross this really unimportant milestone?
Up next we finish off the list with some choice cuts and a weird choice on a system I can't remember anyone in my life even owning..
