The Breakfast Radio Diaries 049: Staying alive in North Street

It's still super cold.

My arm still hurts from the jab from yesterday.

The kids are home from school sick.

But did you know in 1968 the Bee Gees have a jam session in North Street Albury, shortly before travelling to the UK and releasing their first big hit Spicks and Specks?

You learn lots listening to this show!

CAN I BE A BANDIT?

So chatting to the coach of the Albury Wodonga Bandits Mens team in the local basketball, we found out the team is currently looking 'for the final piece of the puzzle' or in basketball terms: a tall forward who knows what they're doing.
I did offer my services (even though I'm completely rubbish at basketball) but at roughly 5 foot 9 inches tall, I'm just a little short for the role - they're looking for someone upwards of 6 foot 8, perhaps a sniff over 7..
I might go alright as a point guard though according to coach Hayden so that's a start..

THREE TIMES THE MAVERICK

So Top Gun Maverick is absolutely slaying things at the box office currently and seems like such a good movie, people are returning for a second viewing.
Our movie guy Shane A loved it so much, he's seen it three times now. And while I can't remember ever getting through the first one (even though I reckon Channel 9 has played it 23 millions times since it came out as their Friday and Saturday movie over the years) I do have a date with the big screen to see what the fuss is about coming up next Wednesday.
I have the need...for the one ring that rules them all!
Wait, I my have that last bit incorrect there...

TENUOUS AT BEST CELEBRITY CONNECTION?

How good is it when you can brag about a celebrity connection, even when it's one of the longest bows drawn to get to that connection? Think along the lines of 'My wife's ex boyfriends personal trainer once met a guy who swears he lived with a girl who did the hair of a woman who once sat next to Elle McPherson but didn't realise who it was until much later.'

Naturally working in radio has given me quite a few interesting celebrity moments over the years including having drinks with Rob Thomas and the Screaming Jets (at different times obviously) but it's the minor moments that are far more entertaining:

-According to my late father, he auditioned to be the drummer of Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs way back when but didn't make the cut because apparently he wasn't loud enough. (Unconfirmed obviously.)

-I went to the same school as Kylie and Danni Minogue (but not at the same time as them)

-I was once presented with an award by Kelsey Grammer! (2011 Australian Commercial Radio awards)

-I once served Jane Kennedy and Rob Sitch from the D-Generation and Working Dog when I was doing Saturday work at a newsagent.

-Osher Gunsberg once complimented my choice of hat at an 80's Nightclub party.

Lu shared the story of meeting 40's screen legend Turhan Bey back in the 80s while travelling across Europe. He turned out to be such a nice guy, he invited them all back for sherries and they ended up staying at his place for a couple of days! Now in case you're wondering 'Wait, that name sounds familiar...' we're talking about this guy:

We had a great response from the Facebook page including an uncle who was a roadie for The Screaming Jets and the Angels, someone who served actor Bud Tingwell a sandwich and a chance encounter with Michael Hutchence in a lift that didn't result in an autograph. But what a reveal from Tim who called up - His Gold Coast based grandma knew the mother of the Bee Gees and found out they needed a place to stay while doing something in Albury. And so not only did the brothers Gibb stay for a night at a house in North Street Albury, they also had a jam session in the backyard!

Imagine coming home to the Bee Gee's just starting out, doing their thing on the grass out the back?

TOMORROW TIS FRIDAY

Flock of 80s Friday again and aside from playing nothing but 80's jams, we're also going to get into the greatest 80's soundtrack songs. The obvious ones spring to mind:

-Eye of the Tiger (Rocky 3)

-Power of Love (Back to the Future)

-Don't you (Forget about me) (Breakfast Club)

-Take my breath away/ Danger Zone (Top Gun)

But you also can't go past Flashdance, St Elmo's Fire, Maniac, Hazy Shade of Winter and Let's Go Crazy. And one I wish I could play in full as part of tomorrow's show:

 Chat to you then!

-Almigo

After all this time, it's still all about that wisal baby song!

Mortal Engines for the Emperor!

Now maybe it's just me and maybe I've read far too much into the Warhammer 40K lore and universe...but I'm seeing a lot of parallels between it and the now available on Netflix movie Mortal Engines..

Please don't ignore this massage

It's been a while between scam emails - life has been life, work has been hectic, I've been grunting and sweating my way through my exercise sessions and so I've been putting responding to random idiots through my email on the back burner.  Until today when I was kindly asked not to 'ignore this massage.' I hope it's a hot stone one! Trust me, I NEVER ignore a massage. Better set the record straight then...
