Look, I really should be editing right now. My latest book Last Thief Standing is in the first draft finished stage and as much as I'd like to leave it on my Google Drive and come back in a couple of days to find it's magically edited itself, we all know that's not going to happen. But silly me installed Cyberpunk 2077 recently and if you've played that game, you'll know how horribly addictive and how much of a true time sink it really is.
So that's distracting enough.
And then there's this 'work' thing (I don't
think it's really going to take off personally) that also seems to want some
of my time, especially in the waking hours. But hey, at least today I got to
chat about human looking robots and boxing in Wales so that was a bonus!
THANKS FOR THE CHAT SHANE
Like we do every Thursday, today I caught up with movie reviewer Shane A, finding out behind the scenes that he too is a massive fan of the TV show Westworld - although I did admit to him that the latest season well and truly confused me. Actually come to think of it, I think the show started to take a one way trip to confusion town right after the first season when the hosts left the park to reap merry hell on the rest of the world.
Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it. The score for the series was and
always has been brilliant. Ed Harris was excellent as The Man in Black and I
find Thandiwe Newton an absolute joy to watch as the kick ass Maeve. It's
just that I likened season 4 to looking at the engine of my Subaru the very
first time - I didn't know what was going on until someone explained
things.
And in both cases, I still refer to written
explanations on occasions just to make sure.
But still, it
was nice to meet a fellow fan.
AL'S QUICK TIP ON EDITING ANYTHING WRITTEN
While it'll sound deceptively simple, I've found it's worked so well when
getting to the editing stage of anything written in front of you - read it out
loud. No not in your head, out loud. I don't care if you sound like John Laws
or squeak like Mickey Mouse, read it out loud. If you don't want to be heard,
read it when there's no one in the house, but just read and correct as you go.
Because if you struggle to read it aloud, just imagine how challenging that
might be for someone reading your work and working it out in their
heads.
It's amazing what you'll pick up (and what you'll realise
you may have missed) when you're hearing your work read back to you, even in
your own voice.
Read it out loud, thank me later.
JAB, JAB, HOOK, UPPERCUT IN WALES
A shout out to local boxer Jason Spike O'Rourke from Boss Boxing Wodonga who also joined me on the show to chat about his trip to Wales soon for a boxing camp over there and the fundraising going on to help get him across the world. I was curious to know if jet lag was something he was worried about but it turns out he's a shift worker so like me, he can do things with little sleep.
I don't know if I'd be keen to step through the ropes to take him on though, lots of sleep or no. Maybe a wrestling match and only if I had a steel chair or two on hand...
Onya Spike :D
TOMORROW
Good god, it'll be Friday already. As much as I don't enjoy doing solo breakfast at least it's been quick. Right now though, I've got some editing to do.
And maybe if there's time after that I might just pop into Night City and see if they need any help with their current gang problem. Just for a minute or two...
