The temps are in the 40's, coffees cheap and both breakfast and dinner are served late. Well that's what Lu experienced on her recent trip across Italy. Closer to home it's cold, coffee's pricey and I'm eating breakfast before the sun rises.
Also when did Book Week really take off because I'm kind of annoyed I missed it in Primary School.
WELCOME BACK
Lu made her return to the airwaves today and the show well and truly lifted. No longer was I telling jokes to myself or asking the walls what they were up to this weekend. A good feeling for sure!
A RETURN TICKET BACK TO THE LATE 90'S PLEASE
Last year I wrote about how good the
90's truly were as a decade
and this morning I had another longing to go back there, just for the pop up
cafe's in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. This was inspired when Lu revealed
an espresso in Italy would set you back a Euro (1.44 AID). Something a little
more involved like a Cafe Latte would be 2 Euros.
This morning I paid
$5.80 for a large cappuccino (4.03 Euro) on it's own. In 1998 a solitary five
dollar note would get you a latte or cap and a good wedge of devilish
dark chocolate cake.
Yes, now I'm sounding like one of those 'back in my day' type of blokes because those glory five dollar days were 24 years back but hey - it was a killer deal. And when you could get four coffees in Italy for the price of one here currently, well suddenly the late 90s really are looking golden.
BOOK ME A SPOT FOR BOOK WEEK
I'm a bit late to the whole 'Book week' party where primary schools and
kindergartens encourage their students to come dressed as their favourite book
character and celebrate their love of reading. I mean I've heard about it
obviously over the last few years and having kids myself has helped fill in
the gaps but this year as we've slowly started to creep out of the pandemic's
shadow, well I reckon the levels of this celebration have practically
exploded.
I've read articles on how to survive book week.
I've
seen stores advertising they stock supplies and costume ideas for book
week.
And yesterday when I picked up my kids from school, the whole
place looked like the fun of school carnival day with awesome costumes
everywhere, my two included.
Now Harry Potter obsessed, this year my daughter went as Cho Chang from Harry Potter while my son opted for the uber-cool Mr Wolf from the Bad Guy books (wonderful wifey helped with the outfits, I just stood back and marvelled at it all.)
And seeing all these kids out and about, having a great time all dressed up as their favourite book character almost made me disappointed that this thing wasn't a thing back when I was in Primary School (mid to late 80s). I think the closest thing to it would have been an Easter Hat Parade maybe? (Then in high school the only dress up days were in the last week of Year 12 - 'Pimp and prostitute day' was absolutely hilarious.) Thinking on this too, I had a few options of dress up from books back then:
-Asterix (I was too small for Obelix)
-Tin Tin
-I don't think going as one of the Hardy Boys would have worked, given they look like everybody else...
-Someone from a choose your own adventure cover? That or one of the Fighting Fantasy Game Books.
-Captain Pugwash
-Spiderman (Still big today!)
Of course dressing up for today's book celebration would give me thousands of more popular options to explore, but me being me, I'd probably pick something really obscure as an option that I'd have to explain to everyone who asked. Like dressing up as the shifting house in House of Leaves
Or maybe even one of my own characters as a way to play my books. 'Who I am? Why I'm Hack from the Hack series of books out now through Amazon!'
Eh...maybe not.
TOMORROW
We talk holidays, movies and how cold it is (still). Bring on Spring already, please!
Chat then
