It should have been a day of celebrations - 100 episodes of a show since the first day when I pumped myself up so much, I kept crashing into everything. But no it turned out to be a truly busy Friday where we remembered Queen Elizabeth and every technical part behind the scenes bugged out at the worst time possible..
PLAY QUEEN FOR THE QUEEN
From 8am-9am we played nothing but Queen songs to celebrate the life and times of Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. We played tribute pieces and chatted to listeners who had seen her as part of school excursions on one of her many visits to Australia, reflecting on the fact that there were so many here in Oz that had known her as their only Monarch. Which is a huge record given that I've lived through 9 Prime Ministers (8 if you don't count Kevin Rudd coming back for a spell) in my years on this Earth and the Queen has remained the Queen the entire time.
So farewell to one of the most graceful and yet toughest ladies mentally on the planet, who reigned for seven decades and still stood proud against anything and everything thrown at the royal family (and boy oh boy was that a lot of stuff!). Rest in peace your majesty.
THE MACHINE SPIRITS ARE ANGRY TODAY
|
Hi, could you please exercise the panel demons? Ta. |
Did the tech priests forget to anoint the studio panel with holy oil again? Or
did everything technical decide to celebrate 100 shows and counting by
throwing themselves into the nearest wall? Either way, while I've been typing
this I've had the company tech support calling for more clarification on what
went wrong.
Or more to the point, how I almost wanted to pour hot coffee
all over the studio computer as sign I was keen for it to get its s--t
together.
In no particular order:
-The internet came and went like it was a confused tide
-Adobe Audition decided I shouldn't be playing a particular grab from Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20 and promptly ate itself.
-And the phone system hung around for the length of a cup of coffee before
deciding it needed to cease things then and there and reset itself. Take a
caller? Sure, let me just gra- Oh wait, the machine has died again.
Constantly.
In
fact it did this so often, I had to get the emergency technicians on during
the middle of the show to try and shine some light on the problem. Now usually
in this scenario when you call in an expert (like a mechanic when your car
starts to make strange noises) the problem instantly disappears before you can
show them the issue and why you brought it there in the first place. But no,
the tech logged on and watched the system crash in spectacular fashion in
front of her very eyes. And while they couldn't fix it then and there, the
investigation has begun!
(Today was the first time in 100 shows where we had to switch studios - and then back again - in the middle of things to put more than one caller to air. Hopefully those naughty panel gremlins are gone come Monday!)
COFFEE, SANDWICH, BREATHE, WEEKEND
I'm proud to say that even though I wanted to rip the studio computer out and
drop punt it through the nearest window out of frustration, the show went on
and it sounded just fine. It's the 'radio duck' theory - it looks (or sounds)
calm on the outset but below the water there's some furious paddling going on.
Or in this case, tech support.
I relaxed with a big bucket of
coffee and a toasted bacon and egg sandwich, finished off my Friday
commitments and here we are. Our plans were to go to a Harry Potter quiz night
(Daughter's obsessed, son is not) but unfortunately the family we were going
with (also containing a HP fanatic) are out with illness.
|
Not us, just a HP loving family somewhere |
So instead it'll be hot dogs and a movie night at home, maybe with a couple of HP questions thrown in for giggles. As long as I don't have to summon a phoenix, conjure a muggle or run through a bus station wall to get to Hogs Breath then we'll be just fine! (Yes I know, my Potter fandom isn't that great..)
THANKS FOR THE TON!
Lu, thanks for the 100 eps so far.
Mal, thanks for giving me a chance.
My
family, thanks for putting up with the tiredness and the early starts.
The
Border, thanks for listening so far.
And you, thanks for reading my
random radio adventures so far! Here's to many more to come!
Enjoy your weekend
