The headphones are staying in (and working well), we found out how creative hackers can get and it seems my son is leaving me in the virtual dust when we compare YouTube accounts.
HEY ARE YOU IN BULGARIA AT THE MOMENT?
I was actually asked that by my bank once because while I wasn't (I was a long long way away from Bulgaria being in Bendigo Aus at the time) someone trying to do rude things to my credit card was. Somehow (later revealed to be a data breach) someone had got my details and booked themselves a cross Europe flight on my coin. Luckily red flags were raised, alarms went off at my bank and a quick courtesy call to my good self confirmed that no, I wasn't currently negotiating with a Bulgarian travel agent. They promptly killed those travel plans, canceled my card and sent me a new one.
Sadly this wasn't the first time this has happened. Way back when there was a radio station weekend warrior who seemingly enjoyed looking at as many naked women as he could when there was nobody around. It turns out the pics of these lusty ladies wasn't the only thing he downloaded, managing to infect the production computer with a key logger than recorded me logging into my bank account during office hours. Just as I was about to embark on an interstate trip with my brother, my account suddenly seemed a lot emptier than usual. I did get the money back thankfully but not without a lengthy investigation and reduced holiday entertainment.
So with that and the whole Optus/Telstra/Everywhere hack still causing fallout
today, we asked the question 'When have you been hacked?' and got everything
to credit card break ins (I feel ya!) to dodgy people trying to access Mygov
accounts.
A big shoutout to the listener who shared the tale of
having $80,000 destined for his business almost disappear into virtual ether
thanks to a hacker who'd wormed themselves into his communication system and
tried to head the money off at the pass so to speak with some creative social
engineering to accounts receiving. Had the person in that department not
checked why the account details had changed all of a sudden, well this
wouldn't have been a lucky story at all..
IMPRESSED DAD MOMENT
So long story short, at the start of this year I built myself a computer.
Nothing too pricey or top end really but something quite a bit quicker and
more powerful than my old unit. And rather than sell the old one, I passed it
onto my son Jackson who was more than happy to upgrade after taking ownership
of my old laptop.
However as the months rolled on and Jackson
decided to push this system to it's absolute limit, a few limitations became
apparent.
'Dad, sometimes Roblox the game is slow to do anything.'
'Dad, can I use your computer to use <editing program> Davinchi Resolve?' (Because the onboard graphics of my old computer couldn't come close to running it. So he'd do any kind of editing video wise on my computer when I wasn't using it.)

'Dad, OBS <the screen recorder program> doesn't really like this old system...'
This was solved with the purchase of a second hand GTX 1650 graphics card online. Suddenly the flood gates opened and he could do everything - Roblox ran smoother, YouTube YouTubed better, OBS did its thing, Davinchi didn't explode mid project. A million thank you's dad, all systems are go!
That pretty much solved everything yes?
Er..no.
'Dad, the internet dropped out while I was trying to live stream..' Wait, you're live streaming now?
'Dad, the internet crashed aaaaagggggaain!' (This was a notoriously unreliable TP-Link 150mps Wi-Fi USB. Anytime my router crashed, I'd have to teach the computer how to recognize the connection again which could take quite a long time.)
Short of moving his entire bedroom to live in the lounge area where the router is located, I opted for a Pcie based wifi card for his computer. And while I was a bit hesitant on buying another TP-Link wifi related product, I'm happy to report that this one was on special from Officeworks at the time and unlike the tiny usb version, hasn't fallen over yet.
'Dad, about when I record anything with my own voice...' Luckily I didn't have to buy anything for this issue, my Blue Snowball Ice microphone was ready to rock and roll again after a year or so in a moving box.
So now he's got a computer than can do what he wants and an internet connection that won't crap out when he's busy creating his next work on YouTube and after a conversation last night and a quick check on his account this morning (he's 11, I keep an eye on things just in case) I discovered...he's killing it.
Yep, my 11 year old is running rings around his old man in terms of...well everything. On my YouTube I have a mix of everything from interview grabs, audiobook bits and creative stuff and this is a snapshot of close to a full month:
And that's with 96 videos and 30 subscribers. I'd be okay with this had I not watched my little bloke blow me completely out of the water in the same time period:
And that's with just 24 videos, 99% about Roblox. Including long videos and the occasional YoutTube short. Actually speaking of YouTube shorts, I would be ecstatic if I could land anywhere near this effort. This video is less than 24 hours old (and probably helped with that +9 subscribers) and look at it go!
Seriously, with numbers like that and how much he enjoys producing content, how could I not be a proud dad watching his confidence level grow? Yes I'd probably enjoy him on the computer a bit less but I can't scoff at his success so far, especially when he's only been doing this for a couple of months.
Maybe I should get him to write this blog and make me some millions?
(Although to help even the score, enjoy my latest YouTube short!)
HEADPHONE CHECK
It's coming up to 24 hours with the JLabs wireless headphone pods from yesterday and while it's taken a little time to get the hang of (after so long with corded pairs) I can report that things are going well.
-They didn't get in the way or come flying out during yesterdays barbell sessions. While I didn't move much outside of the lifts themselves, only one of them made a break for freedom when I was reaching for a plate on the ground.
-My Samsung and these things have become best mates and I couldn't be more thrilled. As soon as you pull them out of their travel case and it senses the phone is near, they hook up. No more having to press a power button down and wait. Same when you pack them away, they disconnect as soon as you close the case, lovely.
-I will admit it's taking me a little time using the phone to skip tracks rather than tapping a button somewhere on the buds. I mean there's probably a skip forward/backwards function somewhere but I haven't really investigated yet.
-Yep, enjoying them so far!
Right, time to go listen to some more podcasts with them!
Chat tomorrow
