My current arch nemesis Storm-Asthma burst into the house uninvited last night and we tussled for a couple of hours before I finally felt okay to back to bed again. So with that lack of recharge and a big to do listen before I could whisper to myself 'The weekend begins...now', it's no wonder all I want to do now is curl up on the couch and watch episodes of Eat The Rich on Netflix before snoozing the afternoon away while it rains outside.
But before I become one with the recliner, let's talk awesome Aussie music first.
WHO DID IT BEST LIVE?
We're doing Oztober again this year, a month long tribute to the Australian music scene. So as part of it today (in lieu of the usual Flock of 80's Friday) we put the question out there, 'Who's the best live aussie act you've ever seen?'
During the show I had a quick think and came up with:
Marc Seymour, lead singer of Hunters and Collectors and The Undertow. Not only was I a big fan of H+C (Loved their Cut album) but I've also had the pleasure of interviewing Marc a few years ago about touring, the aussie pub scene back in the 80s and songs such as the epic Holy Grail.
Long before the interview I remember meeting him briefly at 3YB Warnambool before he performed at some kind of street festival that night. While he had a great gig, it was cut short due to an errant couple of guitar strings that broke on him (those damn thin e strings!) but he still put on an epic show until that happened.
Of course now that I'm home and my subconscious has had more time to think on it, let's also add:
John Butler - I believe this was a gig in Ballarat back in the mid 2000s along with the Trio. Already aware of his prowess with my love of his song Zebra, John put on a masterclass that night, especially with his tune Oceans. It started with the entire band playing it, then a third of the way through they got up and wandered offstage, leaving John to carry on while they had a beer, ate a pizza and did their tax returns, finally returning for the final third.
He just carried on performing like they'd never left and didn't skip a beat the entire time. Very cool to watch.
Not only is Diesel one of my favourite performers to interview (he has the greatest stories ever and loves a good chat about anything) but I finally got to see him do his thing live a couple of years ago and I've never seen someone work, wail and ride a set of guitars like he did all over the stage. If the studio version of a song is 3:30, then expect at least twice that length when he performs it live because he'll just add to it. If a roadie flashes up a '10 mins left of your set signal' then he'll probably use most of that time to get to the half way point of what he's playing, he's caught up in the moment and the sounds his axe is making so much.
Constantly experimenting, always playing and never too far from a stage - I don't think there'll ever be a time when he'll team up with Marc and John to perform but I hope to be front row if that ever happens.
MORE OF THE WET STUFF
I joked earlier this week that every time Thursday rolls around, we find ourselves talking about impending rain. And once again this morning wouldn't you know it? We talked about the impending rain. According to the latest update and that big haul heading South, we're okay for now but there's plenty more on the way for a good chunk of the East side of the country this weekend.
(A shout out to all the calls who reported flooded roads across the show this morning - we always appreciate the updates!)
But as bad as the rains, mould, storm asthma, flood roads and spillway spillovers have been, it could be worse, a whole lot worse. We could be a similar situation to Southwest Florida and the wreckage and devastation caused by Hurricane Ian. Our thoughts are with everyone caught up in that horrific situation.
Time to rest and bring in the weekend.
