Look if you're searching for songs for basic moods (love, tiredness, boredom, hunger etc) then sorry, this isn't the list for you. There are literally millions of options out there covering the basics - have at thee Youtube.
No what we're looking at today are songs for oddly specific moods. Those 'Gosh, I thought I was the only one who ever felt like this!' moods and scenarios aching for the perfect soundtrack. I may have found some but as always with this place, results may vary..
I'M EXERCISING IN A SESSION INVOLVING SQUATS AND/OR OVERHEAD BARBELL PRESSES AND I'M THINKING ABOUT TAKING ON THE WORLD, ONLY THE INSPIRATIONAL LEVELS TO HEADBUTT THE UNIVERSE AREN'T QUITE THERE YET. DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING LIKE THIS?
I sure do, time to crank out Graham Candy - Back in to it!
Taking the message in both the literally and figurative sense, the message is the same. You're not going to get anywhere without working your ass off. And if the plan is to work your ass off (and slim it down for whatever reason) then said rule still applies, work hard. Work up a sweat, lift that heavy stuff, put it down, repeat. Put your back in to it - which is something I usually have to remind myself every time I mentally try to look past squats as an option when lifting weights in the backyard..
I'M DRIFTING AROUND THE MOUNTAIN ROADS OF JAPAN IN A HIGH POWERED MAZDA AT MIDNIGHT AND WHILE I SHOULD BE STUPIDLY EXCITED ABOUT DOING THIS, MY MIND IS WANDERING AND THINKING ABOUT SOMEONE.
Okay well try not to crash into anyone or various mountain road barriers while playing this: DJ Sandstorm - Hide the Bitter Placebo
It's got that frantic 'made one corner, already thinking of the next' type of energy about it while both singers reflect on who's currently on their mind. And no doubt on long drives you too have found your yourself thinking of someone else (possibly while not racing at the engine limit though..) As mashups go it's an absolute corker but please remember, drift responsibly in a controlled environment
I MANAGED TO DODGE A BULLET IN THE FIGURATIVE SENSE ALTHOUGH I MAY HAVE HAD A HAND IN IT GETTING TO THAT STAGE. POSSIBLY. DEPENDS ON WHO YOU ASK. ANYWAY, IS THERE A SONG FOR ME TO REFLECT ON HOW CLOSE I CAME TO POSSIBLE UNHAPPINESS OR RUIN THAT I MAY HAVE STARTED THE BALL ROLLING ON?
As a matter of fact there is! Greg Laswell - Dodged a Bullet is perfect for this!
A big shout out to the show The Blacklist for not only continuing to point out how good and entertaining James Spader is, but for also helping me discover Greg's incredible work. Dodged a Bullet popped up in one episode (in the perfect scene for it) and introduced me to the fantastic combination of his voice and that wandering an endless highway while thinking out like vibe. Top job Greg!
SO I HAD THIS STRANGE DREAM WHERE JIM MORRISON FROM THE DOORS WAS STILL ALIVE AND HAD MOVED FROM HIS USUAL STUFF TO CONTRIBUTING TO THE RAP WORLD SOMEHOW. CAN YOU HELP ME RELIVE THIS DREAM?
Oddly specific this one for sure but hey, here's some good news - Who Do You Believe in the End? KMT MIX is what you need!
On paper it's an interesting concept - the Lizard King himself waxing lyrical on saying goodbye (to who is entirely up to your own interpretation) while 2Pac raps over the hardships of life and keeping faith in truly trying times. However when it comes together there's just something magical about their dark brooding. Pitched and slowed down slightly Jim sounds older and weighed down with life experience well past his 27 years while Pac does what he does best. They both sound like they've lost so much when performing together like this.
I WANT TO PICTURE MYSELF BALLROOM DANCING BUT IN THE HERE AND NOW OF 2021 AND BEYOND, IN MY OWN LOUNGE. IS THERE SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE IT'S SLOWLY BLEATING OUT OF A GRAMOPHONE AT HALF SPEED?
Boy howdy is there, Feel My Sax by Dj Quads!
It's your tango with a big hit of flavour. Try not to crunk too hard in the middle of it.
SO I HAVE ENEMIES AND IS THERE ANY ADVICE MUSICALLY I CAN TURN TO?
Yup!
Good luck in the big fight to not try and sing along with the chorus when you know it..
HI, ME AGAIN. ABOUT THE ENEMIES THING. IT'S MORE A FAMILY FEUD AND MORE OFTEN THAN NOT I'M WALKING AROUND IN A DELIRIOUS STATE, TRYING NOT TO GET INVOLVED BUT BEING DRAGGED IN ANYWAY. NOW DO YOU HAVE A SONG THAT REFLECTS THIS?
Sure, check this out. It won't solve your problems but it sounds awesome!
(Slightly different to the alt version which wasn't attached to the Baz Lurhman film..)
I LOVE TRAINS, MY PARTNER DOESN'T. WE'RE BREAKING UP (NOT JUST BECAUSE OF THE TRAIN THING BUT THAT'S ONE OF THE REASONS.) OH AND LET'S BE HONEST, IT WASN'T THE GREATEST RELATIONSHIP TO BEGIN WITH...CAN ANYTHING WORK WITH THIS?
I think so...
I WOKE UP THIS MORNING FEELING I WAS GOING TO TAKE ON THE WORLD WHILE AN ORCHESTRA RAN AROUND BEHIND ME PROVIDING SOME EPIC SOUNDTRACK WHICH WOULD AMUSE MY CO-WORKERS FOR A BIT BUT ULTIMATELY ANNOY THE BOSS PRETTY QUICK..
Well okay then, this one works wonders!
If you're not ready to take on the world right after this music equivalent of a triple shot latte...well you probably need to sleep a bit more then..
LOOK, INTERESTING MOOD THIS ONE. I NEED SOMETHING DRIPPING IN MAD FUNK BUT STILL CREATE SOMETHING CHALLENGING FOR MY BRAIN. I BET YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING IN THAT CATEGORY!
I bet I do! Prisencolinensinainciusol!
Look, all I can explain here is that is sounds like English, so agonisingly close to it...but it isn't. A song that depicts how English sounds to those who don't speak it, this one has so much going on in it - the strange classroom film clip, his amazing swagger, that incredibly funk train railroading through - it oozes 70's and stupid fun and not in the that necessary order either. Amazing.
THE FUTURE IS BLEAK AND I NEED SOME PIANO TO REFLECT ON HOW THE ROBOTS AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS TAKING OVER..
Oh god, I feel you!
Don't you hate when you remember things for a conversation long after the conversation has finished? Case in point when I was having a chat about my favourite songs involving piano last night and somehow managed to clean forget this one (I did remember Gary Jules playing Mad World beautifully so it wasn't a total fail..). I'm not sure how though - not only is it a brilliant rendition of a song I love from Pink Floyd's epic Dark Side of the Moon album, it also turns up at the perfect point in the 2nd series of Westworld, a show I also loved.
But I remember now so here we are - play it just before the droids run riot..
(Also a big shout out to the Offspring and their piano version of Gone Away, also amazing stuff..)
I WANT SOMETHING THAT MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I'M GOING TO DROPKICK SOMEONE OUT OF A THIRD STORY WINDOW AND THEN DO SOMETHING EVEN MORE RECKLESS!
Right...just warn me before you're about to do this..
LOOK THIS IS REALLY STRANGE AND I'M NOT SURE I SHOULD ADMIT THIS, BUT REMEMBER THE NINTENDO GAME TETRIS? WELL THE THING IS I LOVE TETRIS AND I LOVE TO DANCE AND I WAS WONDE-
Shhhh! Hush. Listen to this. Come back and thank me later.
Loving the music stuff? Why not check out our other musical adventures!
