The breakfast radio diaries 002: Trading paint

I got some more sleep, only waking once. The alarm beat the cat. I listened to a finance podcast on the walk to work instead of hardcore hip hop and didn't drive through any walls.

Even though my song choice of Survivor's Eye of the Tiger didn't get a spin, in the immortal words of Ice Cube - today was a good day.

EARLY MORNING ALBURY

I already consider Albury NSW a pretty town but there's even more amazing beauty in it either late in the night or in my case early in the morning. Around 5am it's super quiet too, unlike my previous radio job on the Gold Coast where  a 6am start would see a few people up with you getting their exercise on or walking the job.

Here it's just me, the very early morning commuter and maybe a gym goer who can't sleep.

The walk starts with a look over the township

Then we hit this large walkway/bike track where there's nary another soul in sight.

I've got a couple of choices of bridges to take too. There's the nice big bridge leading to a great look over the town...

Or there's this one to the train station that in the dark hours doubles as either a bridge out of a cheap sci fi movie or one hell of a funky mine shaft, you decide.

Remind me to go here for a coffee sometime. If it looks this amazing in the super early AM, then the brews here should be pretty awesome too.

Time check - time to get into the studio and stuck into the coffee already Al!

PODCAST CHOICE TO START A HUMP DAY (AKA WEDNESDAY)

This isn't the first time I've raved on about one of Tim Ferriss's podcast guests before (recently loving Niel Gaiman and his superb voice but there was also the time Pavel dropped by to talk all things kettle bells) nor will it be the last - he has a knack of chatting away with some of the most interesting people on the planet like Morgan Housel here, finance columnist and author of books such as The Psychology of Money.

While I'll admit that talking finance doesn't usually grace a place in my top ten interests, Morgan's passion on it as well as he depths of history is evident from the first minute this chat starts. His clear and concise delivery and stories mean you won't be nodding off at all over the three hour podcast and if you need to start your early morning work day in a calm state (as opposed to me yesterday bouncing all over the shop badly) then I highly recommend this one.

OPTIONAL EXTRA: DEAD LIZARD

My car is sold, long live the Stagea. And today I shared the story on air of finally getting around to cleaning it from wheel to roof racks, in preparation of the latest interested party (and the guy who ultimately did buy it). Over the space of a few hours I got rid of 99% of the dead tree life that had fallen on it, the bird poo that covered it and all the dirt and marks from the rains. What I only discovered last minute was this little guy who'd made his way into my headlight and never came out again..

Of course by that time I was so tired of cleaning, I didn't even think of trying to get him out of there. I'd have to take the entire assembly out and possibly even have to use a heat gun to get the front lens off and so figuring no one would even notice, I left him the lizard where he was.

The mechanical mate of the buyer who was there to give the wagon a look over spotted it instantly the next day. Surprisingly he thought it was so cool, he urged his friend to keep it there if he bought the car, which as you've read, he has.

Maybe if I put a dead lizard in there earlier it would have sold far quicker?

HOW LONG BETWEEN PINWHEELS?

Lu spoke of getting her family some chicken pinwheels. The adults loved it, the kids not so much. How long has it been since I last had one myself? Uh...I'll get back to you on that one.

But you know when someone talks about food and suddenly you think 'Yeah, right about now a chicken pinwheel wouldn't go astray?' Not really a breakfast go to I know but tasty!

How bout some air fried pork bites instead hey?

SMACKETH DOWN THE SONG

Well the segment was originally called 'Song Smackdown' but since we're into day two of this new show, 'Fight for your flashback' seemed a fitting update. We pit one song against another, debate which should be played and the listeners decide who's song reigns supreme. And since the AFL officially kicks off tonight (Supercoach update coming shortly!) what better song choice than something along the lines of winning?

So I fought for my choice, explaining that if you needed Wednesday motivation then it wouldn't come much better than a big belt of Survivor's Eye of The Tiger, nice and loud.

But alas, twas not to be. While the battle was close, some favouritism to Lu (I get it, I'm the new guy here) just saw her choice edge out mine votes wise. And since it includes John Farnham, one of the nicest Aussie musos I've been blessed with interviewing over the years, I have zero cause for complaint. Onya John!

Current scores:

Lu 1

Al 0

Maybe a little bit of Mexican Radio by Wall of Voodoo on my side will redeem things next week?

STILL WORKING ON THAT TIREDNESS THING

That's going to take a long while to get the hang of, especially round dinner time when my brain turns mushier than the mushy peas on the dinner plate. Still after I didn't rev myself up to ridiculous levels and as a consequence, everything went a whole lot smoother. Not perfect, but it certainly beat day 1. If this was a car race then today I'm not crashing into walls, more trading paint with other cars. Onward and upwards!

Mortal Engines for the Emperor!

Now maybe it's just me and maybe I've read far too much into the Warhammer 40K lore and universe...but I'm seeing a lot of parallels between it and the now available on Netflix movie Mortal Engines..

Please don't ignore this massage

It's been a while between scam emails - life has been life, work has been hectic, I've been grunting and sweating my way through my exercise sessions and so I've been putting responding to random idiots through my email on the back burner.  Until today when I was kindly asked not to 'ignore this massage.' I hope it's a hot stone one! Trust me, I NEVER ignore a massage. Better set the record straight then...
