I had my kids on as part of the show today, relaying their horse pick in the Albury Gold Cup. And while their time on air accounted for all of 10 seconds or so, they absolutely loved it. By the time they both hit 21, we're going to have a lot of audio to play on their celebration day!
THE RACE THAT STOPPED ONE HALF OF THE BORDER FOR HALF THE DAY
A really rough selection was the closest I actually got to the race and to no ones surprise, especially mine, it didn't do anything at all come race time. But we gave the big day plenty of coverage and amazingly Sophie managed to pick the winner that absolutely romped home.
It didn't win me a fortune but it was quite the performance.
You have to try these things once in a while |
Plus the kids loved hearing themselves on air, so there's always that too!
ROUND MIDNIGHT
Years ago I had the great pleasure of interviewing Peter Garret and Jim Mogenie from Midnight Oil as they were about to embark on the Great Circle world tour. They were super pumped, rehearsing over 120 songs and good to go and so getting to interview Jim again for this tour (the Resist final tour) this year was a double bonus. He was a fantastic chat, getting into the bittersweet feeling of one final touring lap around the country but also how big the 80's were for the band, especially when the success of their mega hit Blue Sky Mine. For the uninitiated, it goes a little like this:
The original Rutherglen show was postponed due to a member contracting Covid but they're back in action now and ready to rock as only Midnight Oil can. Bring on a Day at the Green come April!
(Also it was another of those 'I've heard these guys and their work for years, now I get to chat to them?' Game on!' moments. If only I could go back and have a beer with 19 year old me and prepare him for some very exciting news - whether or not he'd believe me though is another story..)
LOVED THE BAND, ROCKED THE SHIRT
We put it out there, what 80's band t-shirt did you have? And while we had a few responses including threads of John Farnham and Bon Jovi, amazingly we found someone who owns a Devo red hat. Well more to the point, a 'Devo Energy Dome'.
Now there's a piece of 80's rock show you're not accidentally going to wash the car with! As mentioned yesterday, my own band t-shirt history is poor - short of one belonging to the Tea Party (and I can't even remember where I bought that one) that's all I've had. Obviously I was too busy enjoying myself at Public Enemy, Elton John and U2 to even think of purchasing one (or more than likely saw the price and went 'Yeah, I'm not paying that..')
THIS WORLD IS PAINFULLY SMALL
Lu revealed she got done speeding by a mobile unit she's more than usually aware of. And while I don't have my own speeding fine related fine to add to this (my last one incredibly back circa 2003 which is amazing considering how I drive) I had to laugh at fate this arvo. I was checking out a car in pristine condition and found out that the owner knows quite a few people at work, works round the corner from the station and once got drunk with Lu's husband.
I'm hanging out to find out more when I walk back into the studio come Monday morning!
AND THANKS FOR THE CUTS!
A big shout out to Jardina Williamson and her salon in town (I will track down a name shortly) for offering up free haircuts, warm coffee and conversation to the local homeless community. Remembering back to when I actually had hair, I recall how sharp you feel after a good cut and when we caught up with her on the show we learnt this has been going great guns in helping some of them present better and end up employed which is brilliant.
Again, a minor moment that leads to massive memories. Good on you Jardina!
Time to cook!
Catch you next week,
Almigo
