The Breakfast Radio Diaries 067: Unicorns and battle blocks

Once upon a time I truly believed the statement 'Getting people to do anything on radio during school holidays is a tall order.'

However I was happily corrected this morning. It all depends on what you ask..

YES IT'S SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

I know it's school holidays because my kids are at home burning through the available entertainment options at record speed. And yet I still wondered (out loud even) why one of my favourite cafe's in town had to stop taking coffee orders all of a sudden, just to catch up on back orders. 'School Holidays of course' said the boss, clever me.
And instantly I thought 'Welp, this might be a slow week on the show then.' And before it had even started this morning, I was still of that opinion based on the fact that the post I put up overnight to get the topic of conversation started..

...failed miserably. Not a single like, share or comment. We're we all super bad at saving money right now when the price of just about everything was and still is rising?

So we changed it last minute and decided to see how many Covid Unicorns there were out there across the Border. We're talking people that still after two and a bit years, vaccinated or not, have managed to avoid this bastard thing so far.

And boy did that go nuts..

A SEA OF UNICORNS

There were about 30 comments when we finished up the show, people revealing that they hadn't had covid when others in their work places and family had. Some even knew of people who had it up to three times now and they still managed to avoid it like the plague (pun intended.) At the time of writing there's 92 comments and counting and undoubtedly that list will grow overnight and well into the next few days.

From some of the responses:

My partner and I haven’t had it and we work in customer service

I’m staying at a friends house. All of them caught it (5 people), while I didn’t catch it at all

Been to a handful of music events, my whole work place has had it, I'm still somehow clear

Neither my husband, son or I have had it. I am casual at my local hospital, husband does security work and my son goes to daycare. We've all been exposed to it but must be magic and still haven't got it

I still haven't had it. Work in construction and it's gone through the office but I still remain untouched. Even pregnant with a compromised immune system.

My entire family 🙌🏻 we own and operate an essential business serving customers face to face and going into their homes.

My partner and I are both essential workers and haven’t caught it, neither has our toddler. Terrible flus though.

Missus had it 3 times Im still COVID free

There really has to be something to this or maybe (because I haven't had it either yet) some people are luckier than others.
And with so many people admitting they've dodged the covid bullet by mistake, maybe we should have come up with something a little less rare than the fabled Unicorn?

THE DOCTOR IS IN BACK

Dr Michael Bonning from the NSW AMA joined us once again for a big chat about Flu season, the importance of getting a flu shot still if you haven't yet and Covid being Covid. Incredibly he even checked to make sure I followed his advice from last month and go and get my late Covid booster (which I did.)

It turns out, he's a Covid unicorn too! A fact that surprises him considering he runs a respiratory clinic daily when not talking on shows like ours. (Actually it's quite impressive how many people putting themselves on the Unicorn list are medical workers because they certainly don't get much of a chance to social distance..)

TWAS A GOOD DAY FOR BATTLE

Tomorrow marks the return of Fight For Your Flashback where it's song choice vs song choice once more (and given it's school holidays, both songs will be connected to school somehow) but yesterday afternoon it was a battle of a different kind as the wood came out to play and the kids and I ripped into a couple of games of Battle Blocks.

Introduced to us via the in laws, this is the classic game of Finska by another name and when the sun's out and you've got the space (or a great oval near by) it's a terrific way to spent half an hour. And since it's about $20 AUD for a set at K-Mart, it's very affordable school holiday entertainment.

In fact I may just set up another couple of rounds this afternoon. The sun is out again and it'd be a shame to waste this nice weather..

The true meaning of Flo Rida's song 'Whistle'..

The whistle song? What's it about? Read on! Controversial I know but I'm about to reveal the true meaning behind the Whistle song by Flo Rida. Why? Because I'm getting the general feeling that people around me are really missing the true spirit of Mr Rida's epic masterpiece... We're getting right into the real Flo, yo. After all this time, it's still all about that wisal baby song!

Mortal Engines for the Emperor!

Now maybe it's just me and maybe I've read far too much into the Warhammer 40K lore and universe...but I'm seeing a lot of parallels between it and the now available on Netflix movie Mortal Engines..

Please don't ignore this massage

It's been a while between scam emails - life has been life, work has been hectic, I've been grunting and sweating my way through my exercise sessions and so I've been putting responding to random idiots through my email on the back burner.  Until today when I was kindly asked not to 'ignore this massage.' I hope it's a hot stone one! Trust me, I NEVER ignore a massage. Better set the record straight then...
