The Breakfast Radio Diaries 139 - No water, no juice

It seems Fate isn't finished having a laugh at my expense just yet, deciding over the weekend that we needed to go on a camping trip...in the comfort of our own home.

Oh and the electricity is going to be shut off temporarily, because why not? The good news is, I can smell miso this morning!

THE WATER, IT COMES!

Friday's leaky tap situation went from frustrating to unbearable in no time flat, starting out as a steady drip and then deciding that no matter how hard you tried to turn the taps off, it was full on torrent time. Yep, things just continued to worsen and the shower head gushed away like the invisible man struggled to stay clean no matter how long he stayed under there. And since no one in this house is a fan of wasting water in great gallons we made the decision to cut the water source off at the knees...well the master tap really, while we waited to hear back from the landlords and hopefully a crack team of plumbers.

It's then when you realise how even the simplest of things can change with limited water access. If you wanted to use the dishwasher, the shower would have to run for a couple of hours. Likewise if you wanted to wash the clothes, then that overworked shower head would be busy for most of the day.
So we had 'washing times' where we'd flip the master tap on and do what we needed to do water wise (clean teeth, fill the kettle, load up the sink for dishes, toilet etc) before shutting it off again quickly. Which is a bizarre feeling in your own house really, planning everything around tap times - especially just going for a glass of water, momentarily forgetting that only a tiny trickle would come out.

But there's a plumber on their way out today sometime to pop in, laugh at the situation, pop in another couple of washers and then move on to the next gig post haste. And I for one am looking forward to my celebratory shower when they're done - and maybe even a glass of water fresh out of the tap. Why not, it's been a big weekend!

But of course once we had a solution to that problem, another one reared its ugly head..

THE JUICE, WILL BE OFF!

Okay, I will admit that I glossed over the original message that they sent late last month. But I certainly read it and groaned this time around.

So off the back of a weekend with limited water, we've got a day coming up with no electricity either. And guess who loaded up the fridge over the weekend with enough to eat til payday? Sigh.

Luckily nothing in our house is gas powered because I'm sure that would be next, just for giggles. Fate, you're having a laugh aren't you?

THE SUBTLE AROMA OF...MISO

Almost four years ago I started having on again off again on again off again issues with my sense of smell. It'd work, then it'd fade again, then it'd work (with the help of prednisolone) briefly before running off again, never to be sniffed evermore. While originally it was diagnosed as something bacterial, specialist appointments and scans have confirmed it's actually nasal polyps blocking things up and shunting off my nasal sensors.

One of the only things that work currently (as I wait in line for surgery) albeit temporarily, are cotisoidsteroids that shrink things down enough to be able to pick up scents again. And after a week on the stuff to help get me through one hell of a nasty storm asthma attack last weekend, I'm happy to report that currently I can smell things once more.
And the first thing I smelt this morning was actually last night's dinner: Aldi's Maple Miso Pork

Not only did it smell amazing the next day straight out of the microwave for breakfast, it was damn tasty for dinner last night too - served up with a bed of brown rice and veggies, the kids and I yummed it up!

Top tip: You can throw it straight into the oven but I like to sear each side first before that happens. Don't worry, you won't miss any of the flavour doing this as it's so well marinated, it comes out succulent after 30 mins of roasting away.

And since the memorable miso this morning, I've also sniffed out the following:

-Perfume around the office

-Some kind of cloying sickening air freshener in the mens room (which is better than the alternative obviously)

-Milk

I'm also hoping to smell the following before the gates to the aroma castle close up again:

-Cut grass

-Freshly ground coffee

-Baked anything..

Still, it's nice to have all of my senses working for a change. If only I could fix plumbing problems with the power of my mind however..

Wishful thinking!

Chat tomorrow
